How Long Does Whiplash Last?

On Behalf of McNair Law Offices, PLLC | Sep 13, 2017 | Firm News

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries sustained by car accident victims. It occurs when the head suddenly snaps forward and back and, depending on the force of this abrupt movement, the damage done to the delicate tendons and ligaments can be incredibly painful, producing a wide range of symptoms.

Despite the potential severity of this injury, many often perceive whiplash as a minor injury that does not warrant much attention. However, while most cases of whiplash tend to achieve a full recovery after 6 months, it is not uncommon for it to develop into a long-term injury.

Whenever someone’s carelessness harms you, you may be entitled to compensation. Let our Erie car accident lawyer help you get the compensation you deserve. Call today at 814-616-7499 or contact us online.

How Long Does Whiplash Last?

Whiplash pain can last anywhere from a few days to several months. In the worst cases, it can even become a chronic condition.

After a car collision, whiplash pain can last for a few days, resulting in neck pain and upper back pain, accompanied by headaches. Moderate cases of whiplash can last several months, and injured victims might experience pain and stiffness in the neck as well as upper or lower back pain, and intense headaches.

The Effects of Whiplash

Severe cases can develop into what is known as chronic whiplash, which in addition to the aforementioned symptoms, can also affect one’s sleeping patterns and lead to vision issues.

Generally, if the effects of whiplash pain last longer than 6 months, it is characterized as chronic whiplash and requires treatment with prescribed painkillers and physiotherapy. In mild cases of chronic whiplash, a doctor might treat its effects with paracetamol or anti-inflammatory pills.

Patients are also often advised to keep their head and neck mobile rather than keeping it in a brace, which would stall the healing process.

If you were involved in a car accident, you should visit a doctor as soon as possible. Whiplash should be treated immediately to avoid the possibility of it becoming a chronic issue.

There is no way for a doctor to confirm whiplash, even through the use of x-rays or scans, but your doctor can still make a record of your symptoms. This can help you in the future if you decide to move forward with a claim or personal injury lawsuit. Additionally, your doctor can refer you to a physiotherapist if necessary.
