Summer Road Trip Safety Tips

[email protected] | May 8, 2017 | Firm News

If you plan on taking a road trip with your family or friends this summer, it is imperative to take every safety precaution into consideration before embarking on your journey. Accidents and injuries can easily take the joy away from your upcoming trip. Fortunately, many accidents can be avoided. The following are several tips to have an accident- and injury-free excursion.

Prepare Your Vehicle for the Trip

Before you hit the road, ensure that your car is in tip-top shape. Schedule an appointment for a service if maintenance is required. You can also inspect the vehicle yourself for any potential issues.

Make sure the following car parts are in working order:

  1. Engine
  2. Battery
  3. Brakes
  4. Tires
  5. Windshield wipers

Car Supplies

Once you make sure your vehicle is in working condition, the next step is to pack up. Consider the weight capacity when loading cargo. If you plan on using roof racks or a roof-mounted cargo box, avoid loading them with heavy items since too much weight can make it difficult to maneuver and prone to rollovers.

In case of an emergency, you want to be prepared. Pack snacks, drinking water, blankets, coats, GPS devices, maps, and entertainment. You want these items to be stashed away somewhere with easy access.

The following are important car supplies to have in the event of an emergency:

  1. Spare tire
  2. Jack
  3. Jumper cables
  4. Right tire iron
  5. Flashlight
  6. Road flares
  7. First-aid kit

Your Actions & Behavior on the Road

As soon as you begin your journey, always be aware of your surroundings and your own driving habits. Encourage your passengers to wear their seatbelts, reduce distractions by putting away your cellphone and let your passengers handle the navigation. If you feel drowsy, either have a passenger take over driving duties or pull over to get some rest at a motel or hotel. Essentially, be a defensive driver and always be on the lookout for any unexpected road situations.
