Employees in the Merchant Marine Industry are covered by different laws than shore-based employees.  The Jones Act and the General Maritime Law provide remedies for Merchant Mariners injured onboard ship or onshore in connection with the voyage of their vessel special remedies.

People injured in boating accidents or boating collisions are also subject to Maritime Law.  If you have been injured onboard a ship as a member of the crew, as a passenger or a guest, you should consult with an attorney experienced in Maritime Law to determine what your rights are and how they can be enforced.

With serious injuries, the owner of the vessel may file a limitation action seeking to limit your right to recover.  The limitation can sometimes be avoided if your maritime attorney develops evidence which excludes the owner of the vessel from the benefits of the limitation act.

Maritime Law is often referred to as Admiralty Law.  There are special rules and procedures and persons injured on the water are accorded special status by the law.

If you were injured in a boating accident or onboard ship as a merchant mariner, you should contact us to discuss your rights and remedies.
