People employed shore side in the marine industry may be governed by the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act. This is similar to Workers’ Compensation, but involved different procedures and different agencies. There are certain benefits to be achieved by being treated as a longshore worker rather than a worker covered by the Workers’ Compensation Act.
Longshore cases are handled by the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP), part of the Department of Labor.
We regularly handle longshore cases and have successfully represented injured longshoremen in Department of Labor adversarial proceedings and before the Benefits Review Board.
If you sustain a serious injury as the result of shore side work in the maritime industry, you should contact us for an explanation of your rights.
